A total of 45 registered and loose firearms were surrendered by several members of civilian volunteer organizations in Buluan town in Maguindanao province, a military official disclosed today.
The CVO members and other armed militia men presented the weapons to the joint security forces of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippines National Police around 2 p.m. today in Buluan.
According to Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer of the Eastern Mindanao Command, the move was part of the firearms recall order in the province.
"While we have been taking positive steps toward the complete disarming of Maguindanao by uncovering numerous arms cache in Shariff Aguak, what we are witnessing today is a giant leap to peace," Ferrer added.
He also called on other residents in the towns in Maguindanao to follow suit, adding that disarmament is the key to attaining genuine peace.
"Those who do not wish to part with their firearms will have to face the force of the military and police operations," Ferrer warned.
President Arroyo has recently placed Maguindanao under martial law to expedite the arrest of suspects involved in the election-related carnage of 57 people in the province last Nov. 23.
