Camp Vicente Lim, Laguna - Two male suspects were killed after an armed encounter with members of Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) and Quezon police in Tiaong town in Quezon province Wednesday morning, officials said.
Superintendent Rommel Cardiño, deputy chief of CIDG Region 4A, identified the suspects as Christopher Rete and Salve Abundo. Police got their names from identification cards recovered from their wallets.
Cardiño said that upon receiving the information about a ten-wheeler truck (WBX-799) hijacked by four armed men, they immediately conducted a checkpoint operation at around 7:00 p.
Cardino said the armed men had commandeered the cargo truck owned by Muralla Trucking Corporation loaded with sugar and headed towards Lucena City.
Two hours later, authorities spotted the truck traveling along the diversion road in Tiaong town.
When the authorities flagged down the vehicle, the men inside the truck allegedly fired at the policemen and sped off towards the Maharlika Highway.
A running gun battle ensued that resulted in the killing of the two suspects.
Police said the driver, Gil Serato, and his helper Joel Manuek, who were both hogtied inside the truck, escaped unscathed.
Meanwhile, a hot pursuit operation has been conducted to catch the two other suspects who were able to flee during the shoot-out.
