A policeman assigned in Metro Manila is facing dismissal from the Philippine National Police for firing his service firearm during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
Director Roberto Rosales, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office, said Police Officer 1 Nabu Jusay indiscriminately fired his gun on New Year's Eve while on holiday break in his hometown in Sta. Ana town, Cagayan province.
Rosales said that aside from dismissal proceedings, the policeman will be charged with criminal and administrative cases.
Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that 26 people were hurt due to stray bullets, majority of which recorded during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
The 26 stray bullet injuries were among the 597 firework-related injuries recorded by the DOH from December 21 to January 1, 2010.
The DOH said the number of stray bullet injuries was more than the number of cases recorded the previous year.
Reports said 5 people were also killed during the New Year's Eve celebrations.
